Thanksgiving Turkey

When I was a child, growing up on the farm, my grandfather was more of a nature conservationist than a hunter. He planted apple trees and left the creeks overgrown so that wildlife could flourish. If he did hunt, it was for the dinner table, not for sport.
One year, I had the great opportunity to enjoy a wild turkey that my grandfather had shot. It sticks in my mind as one of my best culinary experiences ever. The flavors were wild and complex, the meat was juicy and tender. It truly was the best turkey that I had ever had.

Last spring, we were given a Kelly Bronze turkey to try, in preparation for raising them on Adventure Farm. The turkey was beautifully packaged with a sprig of rosemary, a detailed cooking manual and a professional thermometer. We lit the grill and cooked it over low heat but taking less time than any turkey we had previously cooked.
What surprise awaited our senses! The bird was delicious, juicy and flavorful, bringing back childhood memories of that special wild turkey from my grandfather. Maybe is was the heritage breed or the three weeks of dry aging that made this bird so tender. All we knew was that we were sold and excited to raise this special breed and offer them to our customers for Thanksgiving feast.

Thanksgiving is just over 3 weeks away and if you need a fresh turkey, try a Kelly Bronze turkey from Adventure Farm. Place your order now while supplies last. With a $50 non-refundable deposit, you can secure your Kelly Bronze turkey now, pick it up early during Thanksgiving week and pay your balance. Just click the TURKEY DEPOSIT tab at the top right of this page to BUY NOW.

THE DETAILS:
If you like eating locally produced food and have interest in heritage breeds, then this is the turkey for you.
The birds are hand plucked and dry aged which adds tenderness, the same way it was done in the USA 100 years ago.
The traditional bronze breed originally came from America and then was bred in Cambridge, England from 1735.
Kelly Bronze is a slow growing breed, bred for fine meat texture.
The turkeys are hatched natural season and are grown to full maturity to give flavor.
Birds are free ranged to give texture and fed a natural diet without hormones or growth promoters.
Due to maturity and increased fat marbling in the meat, the Kelly Bronze turkeys will cook twice as fast as a normal turkey.
Turkeys will be 10-15 lbs.
Price is $11 per pound plus tax.
Turkeys will be ready early in the week of Thanksgiving and customers will be notified by email of the exact date and time for pick up.

Pumpkin Patch in October

The Pumpkin Patch at Adventure Farm opens this weekend!

The festivities will start off with a bang on Friday night with live music, food and wine from 5-8pm at the Pumpkin Patch. Music will be provided by Jason Burke with Frank Bechter and food by South Fork Food Truck. Adventure Farm wine will also be available for purchase.

We had a great month of September with food and music on Fridays at the Tasting Room. Hoping all the regulars and new folks will find us just down the road from the Tasting Room, towards Earlysville, on the left. Look for the Pumpkin Patch Banners and open gates.

If you've never been to our Pumpkin Patch, then please check us out. In addition to music on Friday nights, the patch is open 11-5 on Saturdays and 12-5 on Sundays. Come enjoy our vintage farm. We've been farming for 64 years. There are corn mazes, a pick-your-own pumpkin patch, and hay rides led by Farm Manager Carl Tinder who will teach you a thing or two about cattle and what goes on at our farm.

We will have our premium beef for sale, which is hormone and antibiotic free, USDA inspected, aged 3 weeks, grass fed and grain finished for superior marbling all while being raised in open pastures. Charley's Chili, made with our own ground beef, will be available for purchase as well as our own Adventure Farm wine.

The Pumpkin Patch at Adventure Farm is a great setting for relaxing and enjoying some quality family time. Please call if you have any questions, 434-971-8796.

Feel free to visit our Lakeside Tasting Room just across the farm during our regular hours, Thursdays through Sundays, 11-5.
